A fire in the desert. A curse that refuses to die. And a truth buried deep within the Superstition Mountains…
Lillia Pameroy feels it the moment she arrives in Arizona. A strange pull toward the towering Superstition Mountains… and the secrets they hold.
At first, the trip is filled with adventure—ghost towns, horseback rides, and ancient cliff dwellings. But everything changes when her new friend Sammie’s family is struck by tragedy.
Their stables are burning. Before the flames are even out, Sammie’s father is accused of arson and whispers of an old curse rise once more.
Drawn into the legend of the Lost Dutchman’s gold, Lillia begins uncovering clues that reach deep into the past. With Sammie at her side—and help from unexpected voices long gone—she must piece together the truth before an innocent man loses everything.
But in the Superstitions, some legends are more than stories…
And some curses are not finished yet.
The photographs below helped inspire the story of Broken Curse. Set in Arizona, Lillia’s journey takes her deep into the Superstition Mountains and brings her face to face with both the beauty of the land and the mysteries of the past.

Photographed from the grounds of the Superstition Mountain Museum, this sweeping view captures the rugged beauty of the desert landscape. Look closely at the jagged stone columns along the ridge. In Broken Curse, Lillia discovers what these formations meant to Native Americans… and how their story connects to a mystery that refuses to stay buried.

Be sure to stop and see this remarkable matchbox at the Superstition Mountain Museum. It was crafted from ore left to Julia Thomas, a woman tied closely to the legend of the Lost Dutchman. In Broken Curse, Julia appears to Lillia as one of her imaginings, offering a glimpse into a past filled with secrets, sacrifice, and unanswered questions.

Faded lines and simple markings hint at a mystery that has never been fully solved. This map, on display at the Superstition Mountain Museum, was given to Julia Thomas by Jacob Waltz, known as the “Dutchman,” before his death. Along with it, he left gold ore hidden beneath his bed. In Broken Curse, Lillia begins to wonder… could the truth behind the legend still be waiting to be found?

Taken along the Apache Trail, this view overlooks Apache Lake as the Salt River winds through the Superstition Wilderness. The vast desert feels peaceful here, almost untouched. But in Broken Curse, Lillia learns that even the quietest places can hold stories filled with danger, mystery, and long-forgotten truths.

Elisha Reavis, known as the “Hermit of the Superstitions,” made his home deep in the wilderness at Reavis Ranch. Though his appearance was a bit unusual, he was remembered as a friendly man who preferred a quiet life far from the outside world. In Broken Curse, figures like Reavis remind Lillia that the Superstition Mountains have always drawn those willing to live on the edge of mystery… and perhaps closer to secrets others never see.

While hiking near Superstition Mountain, we were lucky enough to spot wild horses roaming freely through the desert landscape. With saguaros standing tall and the mountains rising behind them, it felt like stepping into another world. In Broken Curse, the land itself feels alive… wild, untamed, and full of stories waiting to be told.

While exploring the Superstition Mountain Museum, Lillia comes face to face with the wildlife of the desert. But it’s the snakeskin stretched along the wall that truly catches her attention… and not in a good way. Sometimes, the desert reveals its dangers in the smallest details.

No Pameroy adventure would be complete without a first morning ice cream breakfast! Lillia and Grauntie continue their tradition at Miner’s Grill and Ice Cream Parlor in Goldfield Ghost Town, a lively stop tucked into the Superstition region. It’s a sweet moment before the mystery deepens… and a reminder that even in the shadow of a curse, there is always room for a little joy.
The Setting for Broken Curse…

Broken Curse is set in the shadow of Arizona’s Superstition Mountains, where jagged cliffs rise above a vast and unforgiving desert.
Lillia and her family explore winding trails, ancient cliff dwellings, and remote stretches of wilderness where stories of the Lost Dutchman’s gold still linger.
In a place where legends are rooted in the land itself, it becomes hard to tell where history ends… and the mystery begins.
